The Mogul Empire Series captivates readers with its rich tapestry of characters, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences to the narrative. This blog post will delve into the key characters of the series, exploring their backgrounds, motivations, and the roles they play in the overarching story. Whether you are a long-time fan or new to the series, understanding these characters will enhance your reading experience.

Lucas Alistar McVain
First Appearance: Book #1
Lucas is unknowingly the heir to the McVain Magazine Empire, a powerful publishing brand rooted in France and the United Kingdom. His parents, Howard and Constance, built the empire with the guidance and support of Constance’s father, Charles Sinclair. Together, they established a respected brand known for fair dealing, collaboration, equal opportunities in the creative arts, and a family-like atmosphere in the workplace.
Their greatest setback was hiring Loretta Vaughn as Lucas’s nanny, a decision that would later cast a shadow over the family’s otherwise successful legacy.
Literature and editorial work run deep in Lucas’s family. His parents and his maternal grandfather all studied literature and built their careers, in different ways, around publishing and editorial leadership. Charles, introduced in Book #2, was a major magazine mogul in Austria and Switzerland, while Howard and Constance based their growing brand in France and London.
With Charles’s guidance, Constance and Howard transformed a new weekly magazine into two branded publications focused on high fashion and commercial fashion. Their success reflected the family’s shared belief in helping one another develop and grow.
Howard came from humble beginnings. His parents ran clothing boutiques in Germany and Portugal, but their relationship with him became strained after he married Constance, whom they believed was a bad influence. More about that conflict will be revealed in Book #3. The rift placed a great deal of stress on Howard, and it was not until Constance discovered she was pregnant with Lucas that he and Constance finally felt they could breathe more easily.
Howard and Constance shared a deep love and affection for one another, and that love carried over into the way they raised Lucas. As a young man born into a family of magazine moguls, Lucas embodies resilience, strength, ambition, creativity, mindfulness, and the ability to love something—or someone—wholeheartedly.
Lucas’s journey begins in a small college town in Boston, where he dreams of breaking free from societal constraints and working his way to the top of his career. Like his parents before him, he is an aspiring writer and editor. He is also an aspiring officer who holds board member positions in student government and his college fraternity.
When Lucas returns home for the summer, he grows suspicious of Marcus. What Lucas does not realize is that his father hired Marcus to help protect him from Loretta. Although Lucas remains skeptical at first, Marcus’s reassurance and the letters from his parents help him understand that everything will be all right. In time, Lucas begins to believe that he can have a future with Marcus.

Lucas's Partner: Marcus Voscque
First Appearance: Book #1
Marcus Voscque is the son of Cecelia, the McVain family’s cook. Before Loretta Vaughn was hired as Lucas’s nanny, Marcus often helped his mother prepare meals for the family and care for Lucas. The original intention was for Marcus to take on a larger caregiving role, but Constance wanted a more maternal figure to look after her son.
Even so, Marcus became a steady presence in Lucas’s early life. He played with him, read to him, helped him in the kitchen when Lucas joined Cecelia, and made sure he was safe. That sense of protection became one of Marcus’s defining traits.
After Lucas’s eighth birthday, Loretta abducted him and took him to the United States. Her goal was to pass Lucas off as her own child and wait until he came of age to claim his inheritance. Once Lucas could legally access his fortune, Loretta planned to get rid of him and take the inheritance for herself.
Four years after Lucas’s abduction, his mother died of a heart attack. Watching the McVain family struggle under the weight of their grief pushed Marcus toward a career in law enforcement. He went to school to become a police officer and eventually began working on Howard McVain’s security detail.
After Lucas’s DNA confirmed his identity, Howard confided in Marcus and sent him to find Lucas and protect him from Loretta. Marcus searched for Loretta until he discovered where Lucas was attending school. Once he located her, he gained her trust and entered into a sham marriage with her so he could get closer to Lucas and shield him from her schemes.
His plan became far more complicated when he fell in love with Lucas. Marcus found himself at a crossroads: continue pretending to be Lucas’s stepfather until Loretta was exposed, reveal the truth and risk putting Lucas in danger, or wait for the right moment to tell Lucas everything and protect their future together.
Lucas remained suspicious of Marcus and wanted answers about who he really was. As their romance began to develop, Lucas started to understand why he felt so captivated by Marcus and why being around him brought such a powerful sense of familiarity.
At the heart of Marcus’s character is his need to protect Lucas. He loves Lucas deeply and would move mountains for him. In the beginning, however, Marcus made things difficult because he could not risk exposing his cover to Loretta.
After Lucas was nearly taken by people working for Loretta, Marcus finally revealed the truth. In doing so, he began to earn Lucas’s trust. Their bond strengthened as they became increasingly drawn to one another, solidifying both their relationship and Marcus’s place in Lucas’s life.

The Nanny/Abductor: Loretta Vaughn
First and only Appearance: Book #1
Loretta Vaughn was originally hired by Constance and Howard McVain to care for their son, Lucas. At first, she appeared to be an ideal candidate. She presented herself as maternal, capable, and able to work well with Lucas’s parents.
In reality, Loretta’s caring persona was only a disguise. She was a calculating and devious woman determined to secure as much money as possible so she would never have to want for anything. Her plan was to abduct Lucas, convince him that his parents had died, and make him believe they had left him in her care.
Loretta forged every necessary document, arranged fake death announcements, and covered her tracks so carefully that the authorities had little reason to question her story. She waited until Lucas’s parents were out of town for one of their many meetings in London, then took him away without anyone knowing.
After convincing eight-year-old Lucas that his parents were gone and had left him under her care, Loretta took him to Connecticut. There, she waited for Lucas to come of age so he could claim his inheritance.
During this time, Loretta masqueraded as a high-powered cosmetics executive. In truth, she had used each of her four previous husbands to enrich herself so she would not have to work. The disappearances of three of those husbands remained unknown until her confrontation with Lucas, when she revealed that she had murdered her third husband, Gregory.
After her sham wedding to Marcus, Loretta was presumed to be away on a business trip. In reality, she was waiting for the people she had hired to capture Lucas and bring him to her. Each attempt failed because of the quick thinking of Marcus and Brooke. Even during the confrontation at the house, Loretta’s sisters, Urma and Corrine, were unable to gain access to Lucas.
When Lucas was on his way to the bar with TJ and Trevor, he was pursued again by men hired by Loretta. With help from Brooke and several officers, the three of them escaped, and Brooke was able to get Lucas to a safer location.
That safety did not last long. When they returned to Lucas’s house to determine whether it was a trap, Lucas insisted on finding out who Loretta’s hostage was. The hostage turned out to be Marcus. Lucas managed to free him, but Loretta attacked Lucas immediately afterward.
Rather than keeping her motives hidden, Loretta confessed openly. Her admission allowed the police to convict her on multiple charges. In the end, Loretta and her sisters were sent to prison, where they would serve lengthy sentences.

The College Connections: TJ Riley and Trevor Loring
First Appearances: Book #1
Travis Jackson Riley, better known as TJ Riley, is the former president of the Beta Kappa Tau fraternity. He and Lucas ran for office together when Lucas was a sophomore, an experience that strengthened their friendship as the series progressed. At Lotus University, their bond grew through fraternity brotherhood and their work as colleagues on the school paper.
TJ becomes one of the people Lucas trusts most during his time in school. Lucas may roll his eyes at TJ’s ridiculous comments or impulsive behavior, but that never changes the truth of their friendship: TJ has always been there for Lucas, and that loyalty remains constant.
TJ is known as a “bro’s guy,” even though he is not especially athletic. He works out to keep himself toned, and the roughhousing he does with his fraternity brothers helps keep him active and grounded. His energy, humor, and easygoing nature make him a memorable presence within the fraternity.
He is deeply involved in campus life. As the fraternity president before Lucas, TJ plays an important leadership role, and he is also heavily involved with the school paper and student publications. His experience and loyalty help explain why Lucas later wants both TJ and Trevor to work with him at the magazine empire.
At one point, TJ admits that he has developed feelings for Lucas. During a text conversation, however, Lucas is honest with him and gently explains that he does not feel the same way. TJ accepts this without resentment. In fact, Lucas’s honesty gives TJ the courage to pursue a real relationship with Trevor.
Book #1 mentions that TJ has a reputation for having a revolving door of romantic escapades. Because of that, Lucas is cautious about TJ’s intentions and wants to make sure his feelings for Trevor are genuine. Lucas does not want a potential breakup to send Trevor into another emotional spiral. Over time, however, TJ’s relationship with Trevor changes him for the better.
TJ helps balance the story and adds emotional depth. His relationship with Trevor changes Trevor’s outlook on love and relationships, while his friendship with Lucas gives Lucas the encouragement he needs to believe he is prepared to take over the empire. TJ’s warmth, humor, and loyalty make the people around him feel at ease.
Trevor Loring serves as secretary and treasurer of the fraternity while TJ is president. After TJ graduates, Trevor becomes vice president and works alongside Lucas during Lucas’s presidency. Trevor is organized, strategic, fair-minded, and firm when necessary.
He also tends to become anxious about schedules, deadlines, events he organizes, and responsibilities that matter to him. Although he can be high-strung, Trevor is a devoted friend who offers others the highest level of support, even when that support is not always returned. He also has a complicated but meaningful family dynamic. While his father is not fully comfortable with Trevor’s sexuality, he still maintains a friendly relationship with his son.
Trevor is deeply sensitive and approaches everything wholeheartedly. He is open about his feelings and rarely holds back from expressing them. That emotional honesty can leave him vulnerable, as seen in the beginning of Book #1 when his relationship with Caleb ends.
Caleb wanted an open relationship, and Trevor agreed, even though the arrangement ultimately hurt him. Caleb took advantage of the freedom to be with other people, and the relationship eventually ended, leaving Trevor to seek comfort in a conversation with Lucas.
As the summer progresses, Trevor unexpectedly finds happiness with TJ. Their relationship is not planned; it begins after a night that was never meant to turn into a sleepover, yet TJ finds himself unwilling to leave Trevor’s side. What starts as an unexpected moment gradually becomes something that feels natural and lasting.
Together, TJ and Trevor complement one another. TJ brings chaos, humor, and spontaneity, while Trevor brings calm, structure, and emotional grounding. Their dynamic helps both characters grow and gives their relationship a sense of balance.

Friends from Home: Zachary and Hayley Shaw
First Appearances: Book #1
Hayley and Zachary Shaw are childhood friends of Lucas, having known him since elementary school. Hayley is one year younger than Lucas, while Zachary is two years older. Both siblings attend junior college before transferring to Lotus University, where they become more closely connected to Lucas’s life, friendships, and future plans.
After graduating from Lotus, Hayley and Zachary are expected to travel abroad and help Lucas run the magazine empire, strengthening their roles as both his longtime friends and future professional allies.
In high school, Zachary fit the image of the typical jock. He often picked on Lucas for being gay and for not being involved in sports. While this followed the familiar pattern of the jock targeting the gay kid, Zachary’s behavior was also a way to hide his feelings for Lucas and protect his status as a popular athlete.
During Marcus and Loretta’s wedding, Zachary reveals that he has feelings for Lucas. He even allows Lucas to use him in an attempt to make Marcus jealous, creating a brief love triangle between Lucas, Marcus, and Zachary. Although Zachary is hurt when Lucas ultimately chooses Marcus, he accepts the decision with maturity. As someone newly out of the closet and still figuring himself out, Zachary chooses to remain Lucas’s friend.
After finishing junior college, Zachary transfers to Lotus University. He rushes Lucas’s fraternity, Beta Kappa Tau, and eventually becomes secretary and treasurer during the year Lucas serves as president. He also works alongside Lucas and Trevor at the school paper while playing on the Lotus football team.
Transferring to Lucas’s school gives Zachary the opportunity to rebuild and strengthen his friendship with him. As they work together, Zachary becomes more open to new possibilities, demonstrates personal growth, and prepares for the future role he will play in helping Lucas with the magazine empire.
Hayley is the kind of friend who becomes deeply invested in the lives of the people she loves. When she learns that Zachary has feelings for Lucas, she becomes determined to see them together. Later, when Lucas chases after Marcus, Hayley becomes upset and nearly stands in the way of that developing relationship.
In the end, Hayley listens to Lucas and reads the letters from his late parents. After seeing the depth of love between Lucas and Marcus, she finally accepts their relationship. She admits to Lucas that he is her best friend and that she loves him.
Hayley can also be dramatic, especially when she feels left out. Her tendency to make a scene can be both comical and irritating, depending on the moment. As the series progresses, she transfers to Lotus University with Zachary and later travels abroad with him to work alongside Lucas at the magazine empire.
Despite her difficulties with men—including an altercation with a former boss at a publication and a painful relationship with her ex, Esteban—Hayley does not allow setbacks to keep her from what she wants. At her core, she wants the best for her friends and family, and she is still searching for her own happiness.
Hayley is a great friend to have, though Lucas might say she is best enjoyed in small doses—just enough to appreciate her loyalty before her intensity starts to drive everyone a little crazy.

Howard McVain and Constance Sinclair
They are both deceased, however they are always mentioned as well as their history, in the entire series.
With the support of Constance’s father, Charles Sinclair, Constance and Howard built a powerful publishing empire. They later helped other members of the family establish magazine empires of their own. Over time, the McVain Magazine Empire expanded across six continents, with each of Lucas’s second cousins overseeing a separate branch.
As the series progresses, the long-term future of the empire becomes a central question. Eventually, it may be wiser for the separate empires to merge into one unified organization, with either one cousin—or several cousins—serving as directors of the entire enterprise. The remaining cousins could then serve as editors in chief of individual magazines.
The unanswered question, which remains unresolved until the fifth book, is this: who will ultimately run the empire?
Constance and Howard hired Loretta to care for Lucas, but her presence was part of a scheme devised by Constance’s sister, Eleanor Sinclair, who hoped to gain access to the family fortune. That plan was ultimately thwarted when Howard hired Marcus to find Lucas and protect him from Loretta.
Although Constance and Howard never appear directly in the story, their influence remains strong throughout the series. Readers learn about them through the stories shared by people Lucas meets, as well as through Marcus and Lucas’s grandfather, Charles.
Throughout the series, Lucas receives letters from his parents. These letters become essential to his journey, helping him uncover the truth, understand his inheritance, and prepare to ascend the empire as his parents intended.
